On Sunday, Andrzej Duda is to meet with Donald Trump in a place called the American Częstochowa. The meeting of the Polish president with the candidate for American president at the height of the campaign could be interpreted as support.
Six weeks before the elections in the United States, Andrzej Duda informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that during his visit to the UN summit he intends to travel to Pennsylvania and meet with presidential candidate Donald Trump there.
Pennsylvania is the most important of the swing states. It has the most electoral votes among them. – It may turn out that in November it will be Pennsylvania that will elect the president, when this difference in electoral votes will be very small – indicates Rafał Michalski, an Americanist and publicist. – In Pennsylvania, Joe Biden won 4 years ago with a lead of just over 80 thousand votes. In a situation where such a small lead decides about the victory in this key state, approximately 700 thousand voters of Polish origin have a huge significance – points out Marcin Wrona, a correspondent for Fakty TVN.
It was not without reason that Kamala Harris told the Polish community in the presidential debate in Pennsylvania how Trump's presidency would end. – If Donald Trump were president, Putin would be sitting in Kiev right now, looking at the rest of Europe, starting with Poland. Maybe you could tell 800,000 Americans of Polish descent in Pennsylvania how quickly you would bring this war to a surrender out of favor and what you consider friendship with a dictator who would eat you for breakfast – said Harris.
Donald Trump is going on the offensive. According to local media, he wants to visit the National Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on Sunday at the same time that Andrzej Duda will be there. “This is Trump's response, using the president of Poland. I have no illusions about it, because it is directly inscribed in the election campaign,” says Grzegorz Schetyna, a senator from the Civic Platform.
The local Smolensk committee is organizing the ceremonies, mass, and unveiling of the monument, but the Pauline order is firmly distancing itself from the political aspect of the visit. – If President Trump comes, he will come on a private visit: he will pray and visit the sanctuary – says Father Maksymilian Ogar from the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Częstochowa.
An eloquent signal
There is no doubt, however, that Trump's visit to this symbolic place and meeting with the President of Poland will be a telling political signal for the Polish diaspora and confirmation that the foreign leader is involved in the election campaign in the US. – Lack of understanding of the Polish raison d'état. Poland should be observing the American elections, and not rooting for one candidate – comments Krzysztof Gawkowski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs.
As coalition politicians emphasize, the president is showing that he is rooting for a candidate who wants to limit America's role in the world and weaken NATO's role. – He even questioned the functioning of the pact and article five, and wanted to change it into a form of a certain business contract – reminds Andrzej Halicki, MEP of the Civic Platform.
PiS justifies the meeting. – He is simply friends with President Trump. I am convinced that it is in Poland's interest for him to win these presidential elections – says Waldemar Buda, MEP of Law and Justice.
Duda flew to Trump to support him just before the presidential elections in Poland. Now it's time for revenge. Pennsylvania is not the only swing state where the votes of Poles count. – Poles are also very important in Michigan, especially the city of Detroit. Those votes will count very much there too – indicates Rafał Michalski.
While President Duda is with Trump in Pennsylvania, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is going to Detroit. Radosław Sikorski will meet with the Polish community and visit the Abrams tank factory.
