Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met on Saturday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. – I showed very clearly the will of Poland, the will of the Polish government, that the European Union should be a global, very strong player, a very strong partner of various great regional forces and institutions, international organizations and states, including China, Russia and the USA, said the head of the Polish government. Merkel stressed that we must do more for security, including repelling cyber attacks.
On Saturday in Warsaw, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The head of the Polish government said at a press conference after the talks were over that the meeting with the Chancellor was an element of summing up her activities during the 16 years she was in office.
– When the chancellor became chancellor for the first time, she emphasized very strongly that Poland should be very high on the agenda, and good Polish-German relations are the German raison d’etat, and I am glad that these Polish-German relations are indeed very strong, that we have many interests together, not only in the European Union – he said.
Among the topics of Saturday’s talks with the German chancellor, the prime minister mentioned security issues. – We need to mention that we have the 20th anniversary of the attacks on our American partner, the attacks on the World Trade Center and we should be sympathetic to what happened then and not forget about the lessons that we have to learn for the future – he added.
Morawiecki: we want the European Union to be a global, very strong partner of various regional forces
Morawiecki noted that the situation in the last dozen or so weeks has changed dramatically in connection with the situation in Afghanistan. – We are all wondering what could happen after this event, but we already see a shift of some international emphasis and we talked about it for a long time – said the head of the Polish government. As he added, this will create a new situation related to the fight against international terrorism, or in terms of EU relations with China and the US.
– From my perspective, I showed very clearly the will of Poland, the will of the Polish government, that the European Union should be a global, very strong player, a very strong partner of various great regional forces and institutions, international organizations and states, including China, Russia and the USA, said Morawiecki.
– For this to happen, the European Union must be economically strong, it must also strengthen its ability to deter potential aggressors, added the Prime Minister.
Merkel: We must do more for our safety
Angela Merkel stressed that this would probably be her last official visit to Poland as the chancellor of Germany. She also recalled that Saturday will be 20 years since the attack on the World Trade Center. – We knew then that we had to face these challenges and dangers together, so it was obvious to us that we reacted together – said the German Chancellor.
Merkel also referred to the evacuation from Afghanistan. She stated that both Germany, Poland and other allied countries showed solidarity with Afghan collaborators. At the same time, she added that the goal set by NATO had not been achieved in Afghanistan and assessed that the current cooperation with the Taliban would be difficult. Merkel stressed the need for further assistance to Afghan associates of NATO countries, also after the evacuation is over.
– We must do more for our security, including repelling cyber attacks – said the German Chancellor.
