German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her two-day visit to Russia, she met the Russian president in the Kremlin. At a joint press conference, Vladimir Putin publicly commented on the events in Afghanistan following the Taliban occupation for the first time. The leaders also discussed the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Merkel called for the release of the imprisoned opposition activist Alexei Navalny.

During the talks and statements of the Russian president, the chancellor unexpectedly rang in the chancellor’s pocket. Merkel, shaking her head, reached for it, then ran her finger across the screen, silencing the device.
Merkel will visit Kiev on August 22 after her visit to Russia. She traveled to Russia – as the head of the German government – for the 19th and last time. She will not run for the office of chancellor in the Bundestag elections in September.
