Another fatality while hiking in heat in Greece

The body of a Dutch tourist was found on the Greek island of Samos on Saturday. The man had been missing since last Sunday, when he was seen walking there in the heat. So far, four people have died in a similar way recently in Greece, which was struggling with very high temperatures. The search for more is ongoing.

A missing Dutch tourist was found dead early Saturday morning on the Greek island of Samos. With the help of a fire brigade drone, the body of a 74-year-old tourist was found in a ravine, about 300 meters from the place where he was last seen on Sunday, struggling to walk in the heat.

Search for the missing

Greek authorities are still searching for at least four people who have gone missing over the past few days.

On Friday, two French tourists were reported missing in Sikinos, an isolated island in the Cyclades archipelago in the Aegean Sea with less than 400 inhabitants. The two women, aged 73 and 64, left their hotels to meet.

On Thursday, a hotel host reported a 70-year-old American tourist missing on the small island of Mathraki on the northwestern tip of Greece. According to media reports, strong winds prevented the police and fire brigade from reaching the island to start searching for the missing person.

On Amorgos Island, authorities are still searching for a 59-year-old tourist who was reported missing on Tuesday while hiking alone on a very hot day.

High temperature and fatalities

On June 5, a 67-year-old tourist from the Netherlands died of a heart attack in Crete. Local media reported that the cause of his death was heart failure due to high temperature. A day later, also in Crete, a 70-year-old tourist from France died while walking on an empty beach. On Thursday, an 80-year-old man left his hotel in Crete alone and was found dead near an archaeological site near the city of Malia, about 30 kilometers from Heraklion.

Dr. Michael Mosley, a famous British television presenter and author, was found dead last Sunday on the island of Simi.

The media informs tourists about the dangers of hiking in the heat. Temperatures across Greece on Saturday were more than 10 degrees lower than on Thursday, when they reached almost 45 degrees C. They are expected to rise again from Sunday.
