Koalicja Obywatelska intends to submit a motion to reject the anti-TVN bill, which will be processed on Tuesday by the parliamentary committee on culture and media. – We are not taking part in the works, amendments or discussions, because this law has no right to be processed – said MP Iwona Śledzińska-Katarasińska.

On July 7, a group of Law and Justice deputies submitted to the Sejm a draft amendment to the Broadcasting Act. “The will of the legislator is that companies based in Poland cannot be controlled by entities outside the European Economic Area” – it was written in the justification. Commentators agree that the changes are aimed at TVN’s independence. TVN24 is still waiting for the extension of the license by the National Broadcasting Council. The license expires on September 26. An application for its extension was submitted in February 2020. KRRiT claims that the problem lies in the “ownership situation” of the TVN group.

The station’s management wrote in a statement that in 2015 the National Broadcasting Council accepted the entry of American capital into TVN. Since 2016 – under the same ownership conditions – KRRiT has already issued licenses for TVN24 BiS, TTV and TVN International West. Two votes in the KRRiT were held on Thursday regarding the license for TVN24. However, no decisions were made.

On Tuesday, the anti-TVN bill will be dealt with by the parliamentary committee on culture and media. – What has been going on for a few weeks around this project, and today is going to be a finale, I call a hunt with a hunt. For unknown reasons, PiS deputies stated that a well-known, liked, very popular and very serious television station should be thrown out of Poland – said Iwona Śledzińska-Katarasińska during the press conference of the members of the Civic Coalition.

– The only conclusion that we follow as a group of MPs from the Civic Coalition to the committee meeting is that we should reject this project. First, take it off the agenda. If it fails, it is rejected at first reading. We are not participating in the works, amendments or discussions because this act has no right to be processed, she assessed.

As she said, “this does not change the law.” – This act violates at least four articles of the constitution, violates an international agreement, a treaty between the USA and Poland. It spoils our opinion in the world. It abolishes one of the basic principles of democracy, namely freedom of speech and the right to information, she pointed out.
