The government of the Caribbean country of Antigua and Barbuda has decided to auction off a luxury yacht that is moored in the capital’s port – St. John’s. According to the local authorities, its owner is the Russian oligarch Andrei Guriev, who is active in the phosphate fertilizer industry. The yacht Alfa Nero is 80 meters long and is expected to be auctioned for approximately $80 million.

The yacht, named Alfa Nero, has reached St. John’s over 18 months ago with a crew of 41.

According to the Daily Observer published in the Caribbean country, the government of Gaston Browne will announce in the coming days the date of the auction of the yacht, which, as local authorities have so far claimed, may belong to the Russian oligarch Andrei Guryev, considered a friend of the Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The oligarch denies it

Guriev, who operates in the fertilizer industry, denies through his attorney that he is the owner of a luxury yacht that the Caribbean government intends to auction off for at least $81 million.

“Guriev only sailed this vessel from time to time,” wrote a representative of the Russian oligarch in response to an inquiry from the Caribbean government.

Guriev is a close associate of President Vladimir Putin and a magnate who founded Europe’s largest producer of phosphate fertilizers, PhosAgro. It is currently on the European Union’s sanctions list, and its value is estimated at USD 5.66 billion. He owns a stately mansion in London. He bought the 25-bedroom house through the family of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The estate in Witanhurst, north London, is often referred to as the second largest family home in the city. According to The Guardian, it is second only to Buckingham Palace in terms of size.

The crew is still on the yacht

According to the Daily Observer, there are still five crew members on the yacht, who are maintained by the authorities of Antigua and Barbuda. On March 16, the press office of the government of Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced that the auction of the Alfa Nero yacht would be announced by the end of March at the latest.

The 80 m long yacht Alfa Nero is equipped with, among others, a swimming pool, a hair salon and a gym.
