Appeal of Nobel Prize winners to Trump and leaders of the European Union countries: Ask for the release of political prisoners in Belarus

Over 30 Nobel Prize winners appeal to US President Donald Trump and leaders of the European Union countries to take action to free political prisoners in Belarus. Among the signatories were, among others, the reporter Svetlana Aleksijewicz and journalist Dimitrij Muratow.

31 Nobel Prize winners appealed to the US President Donald Trump and leaders of the European Union countries to take action to release political prisoners in Belarus – Radio Swoboda said.

In the open letter, the Nobel Prize winners reminded that over 1,400 political prisoners are currently detaining in Belarusian prisons, including candidates for the president of the country, teachers, doctors, workers, as well as the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize from 2022, human rights defender AleÅ› Bialacki.

“MikoÅ‚a Statkiewicz (presidential candidate in the 2020 election – ed.) He has been in isolation for almost five years, locked in a cell with dimensions of only three meters. Unfortunately, several political prisoners died in prison, including the well -known artist AleÅ› Puszkin ” – we read in the appeal.

Appeal of Nobel Prize on political prisoners

The authors estimate that about 300,000 people were forced to leave Belarus, and thousands were victims of torture and poor treatment by officers.

Nobel laureates call the Belarusian authorities to immediately cease repression and release all political prisoners. President Donald Trump and leaders of the European Union countries asked for support in this action.

The signatories expressed gratitude to the Polish government, as well as diplomats, non -governmental organizations and participants of the “Ultimatum” civic initiative for their efforts, aimed at releasing political prisoners in Belarus.

The appeal was signed by winners in all fields: literature, physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, economic sciences and honored with the Nobel Peace Prize.

Poczobut the prisoner of Lukashenko

One of the political prisoners of the Lukashenko regime is the journalist and activist of the Union of Poles in Lithuania Andrzej Poczobut, who was detained on March 25, 2021 and has been behind bars since then.

In the political trial in 2023, the authorities accused Poczobut who had the citizenship of Belarus, “inciting hatred”, and his actions, consisting in cultivating Polishness and publishing articles in the media, were attributed to the features of “rehabilitation of Nazism.” The beginning was also accused of “calling for actions to the detriment of Belarus.” The activist of the Polish minority was sentenced to eight years of penal colony.

Human rights organizations recognize the Poczobut as a political prisoner, and the proceedings against him – politically motivated. The Polish authorities are constantly demanding the release of the beginning and cleans him of politically motivated, false allegations. In response to the unfair conviction of a journalist, Poland closed the border crossing in Bobrowniki.
