In the commune of Gidle in the Łódź Voivodeship, Reporterka 24 noticed a stork in the nest. Does this mean spring is coming soon? As the ornithologist Andrzej Kruszewicz points out, old individuals usually return to Poland this month, and some of the storks do not fly to Africa, spending the winter in Poland. In his opinion, “the sight of storks in February should not be very surprising.”

Storks from African wintering grounds begin to return en masse to Central Europe in March. In February, they prepare for a long flight. Many of them have more than 10,000 kilometers to cover.

On Kontakt 24 we received a photo of a stork that appeared in the Gidle commune in the Łódź Voivodeship. The author of the photo, Mrs. Iwona, claims that a pair of birds has arrived.

As reported by Reporter 24, the photo, which shows one stork in the nest, was taken on Friday. – Never before have storks appeared here so early, and today we came across them. From what friends have said, they’ve been here for a week now.

“The sight of storks in February should not be very surprising”

As the ornithologist and traveler Andrzej Kruszewicz said in an interview with the editors of Kontakt 24, it happens that storks appear in Poland a little earlier. – The sight of storks in February should not come as a surprise. Firstly, some of the individuals winter in Poland. It may also happen that one of the storks who stayed in the rehabilitation center felt better and started flying – he explained. – In February, there were also cases that storks decided to come to Poland. They were usually older males, he pointed out.

As Kruszewicz added, “you have to enjoy this view.” – If the stork is ringed, we could find out more. The rings are adapted to read numbers from them, for example with binoculars – explained the ornithologist.

In the second half of January we reported that the first storks, returning after a winter spent in Africa, appeared in Hamburg, Germany.
