Oleksandr Senchenko, the temporary head of Ukraine’s diplomatic mission in Armenia, drowned on Sunday evening in Sevan, the largest lake in the Caucasus. The information was provided by the Kiev Independent portal.
Reports of the death of the charge d’affaires were confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, which expressed condolences to his relatives and friends. The ministry said it was “deeply saddened” by the death of an “experienced and highly qualified diplomat”.
Senchenko has worked at the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2003 and was delegated to Ukrainian diplomatic missions in Russia and Azerbaijan.
Local media reported that although rescuers managed to extricate the diplomat from the body of water where he disappeared while swimming, paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Ukraine opened its embassy in Armenia in 1996.
