Reuters Agency reported that according to Armenian authorities, the Metsamor power plant was struck by lightning on the evening of Friday, August 30. The plant, which is located 25 kilometers from the capital Yerevan and is supervised by the government, went into emergency shutdown. It should be noted that this is the only nuclear power plant in Armenia.

As a result of the discharge, “the safety systems switched to emergency shutdown mode of the power plant,” the Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure reported, as quoted by the agency. The Metsamor plant was additionally disconnected from the network.
Currently, one of the plant's two reactors, which was built in 1976, is already operating. The Armenian government has announced that the facility's employees are working to restore its full operation.
