The United Nations Security Council will hold its first formal discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) and its threats this week in New York. The Council wants to call for an international dialogue on its impact on global peace and security.

As Reuters notes, governments around the world are considering how to protect themselves from the dangers of artificial intelligence.

General Secretary in June UN Antonio Guterres has supported a proposal by some AI tech company executives to create an international artificial intelligence oversight body, such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The discussion will be chaired on Tuesday by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly. Great Britain holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council this month and is seeking a global leadership role in AI regulation.

– The possibilities (of artificial intelligence – ed.) are extraordinary. But we must, and we will, approach it safely, said British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during a speech at the London Tech Week conference in mid-June.

After Brexit, the UK needs a new stimulus for the economy and Sunak tried to introduce London as a tech hub to tech leaders. At the same time, he noted that his country may be important from the point of view of artificial intelligence security.

“I want the UK to be not only the intellectual home, but also the geographic home of global AI security legislation,” he said.
