In the next few days, the asteroid will approach the Earth. We are talking about 2023 DZ2, an object that was discovered recently, at the end of February this year. The “close encounter” will take place on Friday evening. The space rock will pass us half the distance between our planet and the moon.

Asteroid 2023 DZ2 was discovered in late February this year by scientists at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on the Canary island of La Palma. The object will be closest to Earth on Friday, March 25 at 8.51pm. It belongs to the Apollo family of asteroids – named after the object 1862 Apollo, which was discovered in the 1930s by the German astronomer Karl Reinmuth.

The diameter of 2023 DZ2 is estimated at 43-95 meters. For comparison, the Chelyabinsk meteor that exploded over Siberia in 2013 was 20 meters in diameter. According to current measurements, the shortest distance that will separate the asteroid 2023 DZ2 from our planet is half the distance between the Earth and the Moon (which is over 348,000 kilometers). In the case of this object, nothing threatens us, but such a short distance will make it possible to see it with a small telescope.

The space rock is moving at 28,044 km/h. While that sounds like breakneck speed, compared to other space rocks observed by astronomers, it is a rather slow asteroid.

2023 DZ2 is classified by NASA as a NEO (Near-Earth Object), like any cosmic object that is at least 193 million kilometers from Earth.
