The panic death toll at the Astroworld festival in Texas has risen to nine. On Thursday, the death of 22-year-old Bharti Shahani was announced. The tragedy happened during a concert by rapper Travis Scott, when the crowd began to press against the stage. – If they hadn’t packed us between the rails, it might not have happened – said the 22-year-old’s cousin, who also participated in the festival. Scott’s lawyers said the musician wishes to contact the victims’ families to express their condolences and provide assistance.

The tragedy occurred last Friday evening during the inaugural concert of the Astroworld festival taking place at the NRG Park complex in Houston. Around 21.15 local time (3.40 am on Saturday in Poland), when the performance of rapper Travis Scott began, the crowd of tens of thousands of fans began to press on the stage. After about 20 minutes – for reasons still unknown – panic broke out.

Ninth victim of panic at the festival

On Thursday, information about the death of the ninth person who participated in the festival was announced. This is Bharti Shahani, 22, a computer science student at Texas A&M University. The victim’s family lawyer, James Lassiter, said the woman had died as a result of “terrible injuries.” During the concert, her sister and cousin, who survived the outbreak of panic, accompanied her. “We want to make sure that those who put profits above the safety of children’s lives are held accountable,” Lassiter said at a press conference attended by Shahani’s relatives.

Mohit Bellani, the cousin of the deceased who attended the concert, said the festival grounds were fenced off with barriers that prevented viewers from escaping when panic broke out. – If they hadn’t packed us between the rails on three sides, it might not have happened – he assessed.

Shahani is the ninth person killed in a tragedy during the performance of Travis Scott. The dead are people aged 14 to 27, the Reuters agency noted. According to the police, a 9-year-old boy is still in critical condition in the hospital.

Travis Scott wants to contact the relatives of the victims

Also on Thursday, attorneys of Travis Scott on his behalf said that the rapper wanted to contact the families of the victims. “He is distraught over what happened and is desperate to express his condolences and provide assistance as soon as possible,” the statement said.

Scott already in his first statement after the tragedy said that he is committed to working with the Houston community to support victims and their families. According to the Reuters agency, at least 50 lawsuits have already been filed against him and the organizer of the festival where the tragedy took place.

Homicide and drug departments are investigating the causes of the tragedy

On Saturday, Houston’s local police chief, Troy Finner, announced that the events of the Scott concert were being dealt with by homicide and drug departments. Specialized teams analyze, among other things, the recordings to find the cause of the sudden pressure towards the stage and why people did not have a way out.

He added that several participants in the incident – including one of the security officers – had to undergo treatment after a drug overdose. – We have an officer’s report which shows that while trying to arrest a citizen he felt a stab in the neck. When he was examined, he passed out and the medical staff did see the needle puncture, Finner said.

The police are also investigating whether during the concert someone deliberately administered drugs to some of the participants without their knowledge.
