Israel is trying to maintain full control over the investigation into the attack on the humanitarian convoy and the media coverage of the situation. He would like to maintain control over what documents the Polish side and other countries whose citizens died in this accident will receive – said Dr. Agnieszka Bryc in “Fakty po Faktach”. Robert Pszczel, a diplomat and OSW analyst, said that Israel must take into account the possibility of losing support in Western countries. – It seems that this is the first time that it has reached the people who are in power there – he said. Referring to the deaths of volunteers in Gaza, he said: – It is good that conclusions are drawn very quickly.

On Sunday, exactly half a year will have passed since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas after the attack by Palestinian terrorists on October 7. The Israeli government claimed that the retaliatory operation had two goals: eliminating Hamas and bringing back the kidnapped hostages.

The current situation in the Middle East was discussed in Saturday's “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 by Dr. Agnieszka Bryc from the University of Nicolaus Copernicus in Toruń and Robert Pszczel, diplomat, former director of the NATO Information Office in Moscow, expert of the Foundation. Kazimierz Pułaski and an analyst at the Center for Eastern Studies.

Dr. Bryc: it was known from the very beginning that this was a “mission impossible”

Dr. Bryc pointed out that after six months of bloody armed conflict, “we are continuing the same operation and it does not seem to be ending soon.”

– What is somewhat new is that against the background of war we impose a return of politics to Israel, but the kind of politics that we remember from before October 7, i.e. intensified protests not only by Netanyahu's critics, but also by the families of the hostages still held in the Gaza Strip, as well as all those who united to consolidate the community and put pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu to make the hostage issue a higher priority than eliminating Hamas, the expert said.

According to her, “it was known from the very beginning that this was a 'mission impossible' and if Gaza could simply be razed to the ground, Hamas would not be eliminated.” – The structures also remain outside the borders of Gaza, and Hamas is also a matter of ideology and certain goals and fighting for a Palestinian state in such a radical style – she explained.

In her opinion, the ongoing protests may lead to a decision on early elections in Israel, which would be a difficult situation for Prime Minister Netanyahu.

“It's good that conclusions are drawn very quickly”

When asked whether the attack by Israeli forces on a humanitarian convoy of the World Central Kitchen organization, in which, among others, a volunteer from Poland was killed, could prove to be a turning point in this war, Robert Pszczel stated that “no modern conflict takes place in an international vacuum.”

– This is an extremely important issue for Israel – he said. According to him, such behavior by Israeli forces may lead to the limitation of certain political possibilities, caused by, among others, limited support from Washington. He pointed out that criticism of Israel from the European Union or the Arab world is nothing new. He added that “something happened,” referring to the sharp reaction in the US to the events in Gaza.

– Even President Trump said something important, even contrary to his party's line, that this war should end quickly because support for Israel cannot be eternal if such situations occur. This is a very serious challenge for Israel, he argued. He added that “we are also somehow involved in this, because a Polish citizen was killed.”

– There are no stronger political motivations than those related to internal politics – emphasized Pszczel. He noted that when it comes to waging a defensive war and fighting terrorism, which is an “existential problem” for Israel, the country ruled by Benjamin Netanyahu still has the support of the democratic part of the international community.

– However, the way this operation was conducted has become extremely important from the point of view of discourse and discussion within various countries. And this translates, for example, into voter support, especially if we are talking about people of the younger generation who are clearly outraged by the scenes we see on the screens. And this has an immediate impact, regardless of the views of the leaders in question, whether it is the United States, Great Britain or France. Israel must take this into account. It seems that this is the first time that it has reached the people who rule there – said the TVN24 guest.

– It is good that conclusions are drawn very quickly – he added.

“Israel is trying to maintain full control over the investigation.”

When asked whether Israel was able to take responsibility for what happened in Gaza, Dr. Bryc replied that “whenever similar situations occurred, only very intense pressure from the US and international organizations helped lead to an investigation and forced the Israeli side to share reliable data and not sweep the matter under the carpet.”

– Israel is trying to maintain full control over the investigation and the media coverage of this situation. He would like to maintain control over what documents Poland and other countries whose citizens died in this accident will receive. It is important that the international community, even within this narrow group of interested countries, puts a lot of pressure on Israel to have, if not participation in this investigation, then influence on this investigation and possibly control over it, said the expert.

She added that by “risking the lives of civilians and not taking into account the consequences,” Israel is causing the number of those who sympathize with it to decrease in the Western world.
