“The drones have achieved their target,” a representative of Ukrainian military intelligence told the media, reporting on the attack on the refinery in the Kaluga region. He did not provide any more details. This is the second petrochemical plant attacked in Russia in the last few days.

The Ukraińska Pravda portal wrote, citing its sources, that “the drones reached the planned targets and caused damage.”

A representative of military intelligence (his name was not disclosed) in an interview with the portal claimed that the refinery in the Kaluga Oblast was used by the regime (Vladimir Putin) for “military purposes”.

The recording, from Russian social media and published by Ukraińska Pravda on the X platform (formerly Twitter), shows the plant and the moment of a powerful explosion.

How many drones hit the plant?

The governor of the Kaluga region, Vladislav Shapsha, announced in a post on the Telegram channel that Russian air defense shot down four drones that appeared near the refinery.

“There are no casualties or damaged infrastructure. An operational group is working on site,” the official said.

The popular Baza channel presented the situation differently. According to his findings, one of the unmanned aerial vehicles “hit a pipe, and then a fire broke out, which was brought under control.” Another Telegram channel, Astra, wrote that three drones hit the plant.

The refinery is located in the town of Polotnyany Zavod in the Kaluga Oblast, which borders the Moscow Oblast.

Regular attacks

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine Ukrainian drones regularly attack targets in the territory Russia. The targets of the attack include, among others, petrochemical plants – recalled the independent portal Meduza.

One of the targets of Wednesday's massive drone attack was refinery in Ryazan. Russian channels on Telegram then reported that three attack drones had hit the plant. The area covered by the fire, according to various sources, was from 100 to 200 square meters.

Also on Wednesday, Ukrainian military intelligence confirmed reports of the attack for the refinery in Novoshakhtinsk in the Rostov region. The services in Kiev emphasized that “this is a facility used by the Russians for military purposes.”

After the attack, the company stopped production. The Russian daily Kommersant recalled that the refinery in Novoshakhtinsk was already attacked by drones in June 2022 and May last year. “It is the largest oil refinery in southern Russia. It produces gasoline, heating oil, ship oil and diesel oil,” the newspaper wrote. She added that the plant's maximum annual processing capacity is 5.6 million tons.
