The Israeli Air Force has attacked a school in the Gaza district of al-Daraj. According to the Israeli side, the building housed a command post of the terrorist organization Hamas. The official Palestinian news agency WAFA, cited by Reuters, reported that the school was housing displaced people from other parts of the enclave. There are many dead.
The Israeli military said the “air force carried out a precision strike on Hamas terrorists” who were at a command post set up at the Al-Tabi'in school in the al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City.
“They used the headquarters to hide and support terrorist attacks against IDF forces and the state of Israel,” the statement said.
Al Jazeera reported that the school was bombed during morning prayers. Local media reported that a fire had broken out in the building and that rescue teams were working to contain it.
Reuters reports, citing the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, that the school was home to refugees from other parts of the Gaza Strip. The agency reports that more than 100 people died in the attack.
Despite the high death toll, the Israeli military says it has taken “a number of steps to limit the risk of civilian casualties.”
War in Gaza
The war in the Gaza Strip broke out after a terrorist attack by Hamas Israel October 7, 2023, in which nearly 1,200 people were killed and 251 kidnapped, some of whom are still imprisoned.
In the Israeli military intervention against Hamas, more than 39,500 people have been killed and over 91,000 injured so far, the Gaza Strip Health Ministry reports.
The Palestinian territory is gripped by a large-scale humanitarian crisis, with hunger and disease rife, and most of the population having become internally displaced.
