130 attempts to illegally cross the Polish border with Belarus were made on Friday, the Border Guard informed. The officers detained 40 foreigners and thwarted the remaining 90 attempts. Among the detained is a Syrian with a Swedish residence card who was waiting for his compatriots abroad. He is to hear the allegation of aiding.
“The number of illegal attempts to cross the border from Belarus to Poland has increased again. Yesterday, ie on August 28, there were 130 such attempts. Border guards detained 40 foreigners, the remaining 90 attempts have been thwarted. It looks like a busy weekend,” the Border Guard said on Twitter.
The Border Guard detained 40 foreigners
Spokeswoman of the Border Guard, 2nd Lt. Anna Michalska informed that among the detained foreigners there were 14 citizens of Syria, five citizens of Somalia and a group of twenty, whose identity is still being confirmed. After the activities are completed, the detainees will be sent to guarded centers for foreigners, which are run by the Border Guard.
On Friday, the guards also detained a Syrian citizen who had a Swedish residence card, so he is legally staying in the European Union. He was waiting for the rest of the Syrians abroad. According to the findings of the officers, the man came by bus to take the remaining foreigners further into the country or further, to Western Europe. A spokeswoman for the Border Guard said that actions were underway in his case. He is to hear the allegation of aiding.
Nearly 3,200 attempts to illegally cross the border in August
In August, the Border Guard recorded nearly 3,200 attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus to Poland. She detained about 950 foreigners, and, as she informs, she foiled the remaining attempts. Lt. Michalska also informed that, according to Friday data, there are over 1,100 people in the guarded centers.
Moreover, since the beginning of July, the Border Guard has accepted over 1.5 thousand applications for international protection from foreigners. The spokeswoman for the Border Guard explained that the procedure of the head of the Office for Foreigners in this case takes about six months.
During this time, people who have crossed the border illegally are staying in guarded centers. If the persons applying for protection legally enter the territory of Poland, i.e. through the border crossing, they end up in open centers for foreigners or can provide an address where I will wait for a decision. – They are then legally in Poland – emphasized 2nd Lt. Michalska.
For over two weeks, a group of migrants has been wandering in Usnarz Górny on the Polish-Belarusian border. They are prevented from moving to Poland by the Border Guard and the army. The area a few hundred meters from the place where the media and volunteers of non-governmental organizations are located, is additionally secured by the police.
Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia accuse Belarus of organizing the transfer of immigrants to their territory under the so-called hybrid war. In a joint statement the prime ministers of Poland and the Baltic states assessed that there was a crisis on the borders with Belarus was planned and systematically organized by the regime of Alexander Lukashenka. They also called on the Belarusian authorities to stop activities leading to escalating tensions.
The European Commission believes that the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border is not a matter of migration but of aggression against Poland. The press services of the European Commission said that this is also the position of the European Union, which had been previously expressed by EU foreign ministers.
