The prosecutor’s office has completed its investigation into the tragic accident near Sierpc. The expert appointed in the case indicated who broke the law and led to the death of four people.

– The proceedings are now legally concluded. By order of January 31, 2023, the prosecutor discontinued the investigation into the death of the perpetrator, Iwona Śmigielska-Kowalska, spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Płock, told us.

– Extensive evidence, including an opinion issued by an appointed expert (Cracow University of Technology, Department of Motor Vehicles), clearly indicated that the accident was caused by the driver of the Volkswagen Caddy, who violated the rules of the road, and that other people did not contribute to this accident – added the prosecutor .

She also noted that the above decision has not been appealed and is final.

On a straight stretch of road

The tragedy happened on Boxing Day 2020in Studzieniec, 200 meters from Sierpc. Two passenger cars collided on a straight section of provincial road number 560. Two families, a total of six people, were traveling in a Nissan and a Volkswagen.

Four died in the accident, including three on the spot: the siblings from the Volkswagen and the woman from the Nissan. On December 31, the woman’s daughter died in the hospital. The other two injured, children in the Nissan, survived.

They were looking for a third car

The case was initially handled by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Sierpc. The police wrote on their website that most likely a 25-year-old man driving a Volkswagen passenger car swerved into the opposite lane right in front of a Nissan approaching from the opposite direction, driven by a 44-year-old woman.

These were preliminary findings. Later, an expert was called in to reconstruct the course of the accident. It was supposed to determine, among other things, the speed at which the drivers were moving. At that time, the investigation was taken over by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Płock. Her spokeswoman Iwona Śmigielska-Kowalska explained this with “the complicated facts of the case”. She also said that there was a theory that a third car was involved in the accident. This, however, has not been confirmed in the end.
