A 49-year-old man from Oświęcim (Lesser Poland Voivodeship) was placed in pre-trial detention for three months, suspected of physically and mentally abusing his 72-year-old mother. The injured senior was covered by the Blue Card procedure. According to the uniforms, the son had been using violence against the woman and threatening her for many months. The man may be imprisoned for five years.

On Wednesday, May 10, before 6 p.m., police officers were called to one of the apartments in Oświęcim, where they intervened because of a domestic dispute. On the spot, it turned out that – according to the police – the aggressive 49-year-old is intoxicated and has not committed violence at home for the first time. He took out his anger on his mother.

Police: son in custody, mother covered by the Blue Card procedure

As the junior inspector Sebastian Gleń, the press officer of the Lesser Poland police, informed in the communiqué, the man was detained and taken to the Oświęcim police headquarters on suspicion of abuse of a senior woman. In turn, the victim was covered by the Blue Card procedure.

– The police department of the criminal division took up the case. Within two days, they collected evidence that the detainee had been using physical and psychological violence, as well as criminal threats against his mother for several months. He most often committed these acts while under the influence of alcohol, Gleń said.

The case files were transferred to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Oświęcim. On Friday (May 12), the 49-year-old was charged, and then – by the court’s decision – he was temporarily arrested. Domestic abuse is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Helping victims of violence. Police appeal

Investigators are appealing for victims to “break the chain of violence”.

– For this purpose, a notification must be made. A number of institutions provide assistance to victims of violence, including poviat family support centres, social welfare centers and crisis intervention centres, emphasized Gleń.

The officers direct their appeal to stop the violence also to people who witness it. Most often they are neighbors or immediate family. – These people, by informing about domestic violence, give strength and support to the victims with their attitude – noted the spokesman for the Małopolska police officers.
