A whale carcass drifting off the Australian island of Rottnest near the state of Western Australia attracted a herd of hungry sharks. Authorities closed several beaches.

The whale carcass was first spotted at sea on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday, when it was just about 100 meters north of the island’s shore, it turned out to be a meal for a large group of sharks. According to local media, about 30 individuals were feeding there.

Australian television portal ABC wrote that dozens of people had gathered on the pier to watch sharks emerge from the water and tear flesh from a dead whale. It is unclear how the animal died, and its species has not been established.

Closed beaches

Explaining this for security reasons, the authorities decided to close several popular beaches on the island. The whale carcass was towed 10 kilometers west of the island.
