After heavy snowfall, the avalanche risk has increased in some areas of Austria and parts of Switzerland. In Tyrol, railway and road traffic was disrupted due to snowstorms, and there were also power outages.
On the night from Friday to Saturday, nearly 50 centimeters of snow fell in many parts of Switzerland and in western Austria in the mountains. On Saturday, the fourth avalanche danger level was announced in high mountain areas in the Austrian states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, the dpa news agency reported.
In Switzerland, the risk of avalanches in high mountain areas is particularly high in the cantons of Graubünden and Valais.
Fallen trees, power outages
In Tyrol, problems caused by difficult weather conditions occurred in both road and rail traffic. In several areas, trees falling on high-voltage lines caused power outages.
The Austrian road traffic association OeAMTC confirmed that difficult road conditions caused by winter weather will prevail on many roads on Saturday – especially in the northern and eastern regions of the Alps. There were accidents, traffic jams and other disruptions on many major routes.
