There was an avalanche in the Salzburg region of Austria. Four skiers are dead, three of them died on the spot.
The tragedy happened on Saturday about 2,400 meters above sea level in the Lungau district. The avalanche covered a total of eight people. Three died on the spot and a third died in a hospital in Klagenfurt, the Reuters news agency reported.
According to the Austrian branch of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the fatalities are skiers who ski outside the designated slopes.
In recent years in Austria, avalanches have killed an average of 20 people per year. There have been fewer deaths in the last two seasons, however, as the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced the number of skiers in the mountains.
