The new regulations were announced during the Sunday conference by Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg. The ban on leaving flats and houses will apply to all unvaccinated people over 12 years of age. The government also renewed its call for an increase in the number of vaccinations. “The number of new infections is higher than ever,” emphasized Schallenberg.

The restrictions entered into force at midnight throughout the country. “The rules apply to people who are neither vaccinated nor convalescent,” explained Health Minister Wolfgang Mueckstein. You will be required to have a valid vaccination certificate or a certificate of coronavirus infection in the last 180 days.

The regulations allow the possibility of going out to see a doctor, visiting health centers or vaccination points. It will also be possible to “meet basic religious needs”, go to school or university.

Schallenberg: The rules are drastic, but they can be modified

Schallenberg added that the Länder will be able to take further, selective action. He admitted that the regulations announced on Sunday were “drastic”, but could be modified if necessary. – You have to take bold and determined actions. Lockdown is an immediate measure. But if the pace of disease continues, further measures will have to be taken, also locally, added Mueckstein.

The Chancellor stressed that “it is extremely important that security measures are not only complied with, but also clearly monitored” and announced “consistent inspections and tough sanctions”. This was confirmed by the head of the Ministry of the Interior, Karl Nehammer, who announced a “strict control network”, also in relation to fraud related to vaccination certificates.

The restrictions will affect about two million people

From Monday, every person living in Austria can be inspected in public space by the police – adds the Austrian portal ORF. APA estimates that the regulations will “affect around two million people.” The regulation is to apply initially until November 24, with the possibility of extension.

Schallenberg noted that he rejected the introduction of mandatory vaccinations, with the exception of medical personnel – Mueckstein announced a separate regulation on this matter. The chancellor also stressed that the new regulation does not affect schools and children under the age of 12, and the order to perform tests in schools three times a week and wear masks in secondary schools will remain valid.

Due to the introduced restrictions, representatives of the Chamber of Commerce (WKOe) called for an increase in subsidies for entrepreneurs, especially for the most affected sectors. “These measures cut about 35 percent of potential customers from specialist stores, so high sales losses are inevitable,” said Rainer Trefelik, a retail spokesman.

Meanwhile, experts in Austria are calling for further action to “reduce contact”, such as putting more emphasis on online work where possible. In turn, virologists called in an open letter published on Friday for further “consistent measures” to increase the vaccination rate and mandatory PCR testing for the vaccinated.
