“Conclave”, “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” dominated this year's list of BAFTA nominees. Outside the race was the film by Swedish-Polish director Magnus von Horn, “Girl with a Needle”, which was on the long list in the best foreign language film category.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for this year's BAFTA Awards on Wednesday. These awards are among the most prestigious in the world and are the most important film awards in the UK. For years, the BAFTA awards have also been an important predictor in the Oscar race. Last year's BAFTA nominations lists and Oscars in the six most important categories were the same.

Edward Berger's film “The Conclave” received the most nominations – 12. Right behind it, with 11 chances for BAFTA awards, is Jacques Audiard's work “Emilia Pérez”. Brady Corbet's “The Brutalist” received nine nominations. These three titles are in the best film category and will compete against “Anora” by Sean Baker and “Completely Unknown” by James Mangold.

The film by Swedish-Polish director Magnus von Horn, “Girl with a Needle”, was unfortunately out of the race in the best foreign language film category. The following films will compete for the statuette in this category: “All Shades of Light”, “Emilia Pérez”, “I'm Still Here”, “Kneecap. Hip-Hop Revolution” and “The Seed of the Holy Fig”.

BAFTA 2025. First nominations for celebrities

In the acting categories, over half of the nominees (14 out of 24 nominations) received their first chance at a BAFTA award. This group included: Isabella Rossellini, Jeremy Strong, Demi Moore, Zoe Saldana, Guy Pearce and Kieran Culkin.

Interestingly, 30-year-old Saoirse Ronan received her seventh nomination in her career. For comparison, Ronan is approaching the tally of the most nominated actors: Michael Caine, Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier, who were nominated eight times throughout their careers.

The winners of the awards are decided by over 8,100 members of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in three rounds of voting. The final round will start on Wednesday, January 22 and will determine this year's winners.

BAFTA announced today that a total of 42 films have been nominated this year. In this year's edition, 235 titles met the formal conditions and the nominees were selected from among them in two rounds of voting.

The 2025 BAFTA Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 16 at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
