In connection with a ship fire in the Baltic Sea, there is no reason to worry about potential environmental contamination, the Latvian State Environmental Protection Service said on Wednesday.

Aija Jalinska, a spokeswoman for the Latvian State Service for Environmental Protection, said that the information about the contents and volume of the ship’s cargo had been verified. “The service has prepared an assessment of environmental threats and started to manage them. There is no reason to worry” – she emphasized, quoted by the LETA agency.

The Latvian Coast Guard Service received information at night from cargo ship “Escape” about a fire on boardwhich the autonomous extinguishing system was unable to put out. The fire started in the engine room and spread to other parts of the unit. On the ship – sailing under the Dutch flag – polymers and paints are transported.

There is no information that cargo tanks were damaged in the fire.

Latvian services immediately sent a rescue team that evacuated the entire 15-person crew of the burning ship. Two tugs equipped with water tanks and foam generators were sent to extinguish the fire.

Tugboats will take the ship to Riga. The unit sailed from Klaipeda to the Latvian capital.
