At least 15 people have died after an explosion in an office building in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital. More than 100 people were hospitalized with various injuries. The number of injured people could rise, according to the local fire department.

The explosion on the fourth and fifth floors of a seven-story office building in the Gulistan commercial district occurred just before 5 p.m. local time (around 12 p.m. Polish time). Nazmul Islam, hospital director of Dhaka Medical College, reported that more than 100 injured people with various injuries were taken to the hospital.

There was no fire in the building, but more than 150 firefighters were organizing the rescue operation, fire department spokesman Dinomoni Sharma said. He noted that the death toll could rise.

One of the injured told AFP that the explosion damaged the building’s wall and shattered windows. – There were people on the floor. I managed to get out of the window,” he said.

The cause of the explosion has yet to be determined, but deadly fires and building explosions are common in Bangladesh, where building safety requirements are inadequate. Reuters recalls that on Sunday three people died after a gas explosion in Dhaka. The day before, seven people lost their lives after a fire broke out at a compressed oxygen factory in Sitakunda, southern Bangladesh.
