Barbara Nowacka – private life

Barbara Nowacka was born in 1975 in Warsaw. As a teenager, she appeared in the popular program “5-10-15” on TVP for several years and hosted, among others, “Shortpress”. She is an IT specialist by education – in 2006 she graduated from the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology, where her father Jerzy Nowacki has been the rector for almost 30 years, and obtained an engineering degree. In 2013, she also completed master’s studies in management at the University of Warsaw, and a year later, postgraduate MBA studies at the French Institute of Management.

In 1993, she started working at the Women’s Helpline of the Federation for Women and Family Planning. In 1997, she joined the Federation of Young Labor Unions (FMUP), and in 2000 she became its vice-chairman. In 2001, she joined the Labor Union. In 2005, she was one of the founders of the Young Socialists. From 2006 to 2014, she was not a member of any party.

Nowacka has two children – Zofia and Kuba. Her mother, Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka, died in disaster in Smolensk in 2010 year. She was, among others, MP, deputy prime minister in the first and second government of Marek Belka and minister of social policy.

Barbara Nowacka’s political career

In 2014, Barbara Nowacka competed in elections to the European Parliament from the lists of the Europa Plus committee and obtained 10,290 votes, but did not win a seat. In the same year, she joined Your Movement, and a few months later she became its co-chair, alongside Janusz Palikot.

Before the 2015 parliamentary elections, she became the leader of the United Left, composed of the Democratic Left Alliance, Your Movement, the Polish Socialist Party, the Labor Union and the Green Party. She won 75,813 votes in the vote, but did not get to the Sejm because left-wing parties did not exceed the electoral threshold of 8%. required for the coalition.

In 2016, Nowacka founded the Inicjatywa Polska association, which was transformed into a political party in 2019. From the beginning of its existence, she remains its chairman to this day. In 2018, before the local elections, the group joined the Civic Coalition (then PO and Nowoczesna), with which it has been associated to this day.

Barbara Nowacka became an MP for the first time after the 2019 parliamentary elections. Then she got into the Sejm, running as the “number one” of the Civic Coalition in the Gdynia district and gaining 88,833 votes. In 2023, she also won 139,524 votes as the “number one” in this district.

Barbara Nowacka – views

Nowacka is known mainly for her activities in support of women’s rights. “I strive for full gender equality in society. I commit to fighting all manifestations of discrimination against women, ensuring us equal rights and opportunities. I want to support initiatives that increase the presence of women in public life and politics,” she writes about herself on her website.

In 2016, she was one of the organizers of the Black Protest against the tightening of abortion regulations. For her activities, she was awarded by the magazine “Foreign Policy” and, next to Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk, was included in the list of the hundred most influential people in the world – Global Thinkers 2016 (among Poles, he had previously received this distinction Radosław Sikorski in 2012, and Donald Tusk in 2019). In 2020, she became involved in the Women’s Strike. During one of the demonstrations was treated with gas tearing up by a policeman.
