The preview of the movie “Barbie” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling ended with applause. Critics are delighted. “Perfection,” writes Katcy Stephan of Variety. “Give Gosling an Oscar nomination,” urges ComicBook’s Jamie Jirak, adding that director Greta Gerwig has surpassed her expectations.

Although “Barbie” by Greta Gerwig will hit cinemas around the world on July 21, a lucky few could attend the pre-premiere screening of the film, which took place on Sunday evening in Los Angeles. It is the most anticipated film of this summer, next to “Oppenheimer” directed by Christopher Nolan, which will hit the screens on the same day as Gerwig’s film.

Although, according to good practice, critics’ reviews will appear only when the film is available in the repertoire, enthusiastic comments flooded social media on Monday. Almost all of them shared the opinion that the picture was “extremely funny and devilishly intelligent”.

Viewers and journalists also praise the cast, emphasizing Ryan Gosling’s excellent performance as Ken. There are voices that he deserved a nomination for a golden statuette.

Give Gosling an Oscar nomination

Variety magazine’s Katcy Stephan calls the film “perfection” and justifies: “Greta Gerwig provides a nuanced commentary on what it means to be a woman in a whimsical, wonderful and funny romp that elicits outbursts of heartfelt laughter. The entire cast shines, especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling who are born for their roles [Barbie i Kena – przyp. red.]”.

Sharronda Williams, host and creator of the Pay or Wait channel, which reviews movies and TV shows, describes the film as “witty, sincere and extremely funny”, also giving the most compliments to Gosling, whom she calls “a scene stealer”.

In turn, Jamie Jirak from ComicBook in an emotional entry assesses: “‘Barbie’ is my favorite movie of 2023 so far. Greta Gerwig exceeded my expectations. She deals with the strengths and weaknesses of Barbie so beautifully. Give Ryan Gosling a nomination for OscarI’m dead serious!”

Eze Baum of This Week Media is no less enthusiastic about the film, writing: “Barbie is a triumph for the creators. A perfect script supported by great performances – especially by Ryan Gosling – turns what could be a simple studio comedy into a sharp commentary on our society.” .

Barbie Director: You Didn’t Even Know You Wanted This

The film aroused considerable interest from the very beginning. The plot was kept secret for a long time. The director of the film Greta Gerwig, whom we remember from the great “Lady Bird” and from “small women” in an interview with the magazine “The Hollywood Reporter” announced that she intends to surprise viewers. “People are like, ‘ah, Margot plays Barbie, I know what it’s going to be.’ But our approach is this: whatever you expect, we will give you something completely different. You didn’t even know you wanted it.”

Gerwig, who co-wrote the film with her partner, director Noah Baumbach, admitted that she was afraid of the film.

“It was exciting because it was terrifying at the same time. I used to get dizzy starting to write. What kind of story is this supposed to be? I felt that fear was interesting. When you’re afraid of something, it’s usually the source of the best material. When you think, ‘this might end my career’, you also have to say ‘I should do it’,’ she confessed in the aforementioned interview.

Initially, producers at Warner Bros. wanted Amy Schumer to play the role of Barbie, but she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. She was then to be replaced by Anne Hathaway, who also left the production. Lady Gaga was also considered, but eventually the role went to Margot Robbie, who seems to be made for her.

Alongside Robbie and Gosling, the film also stars Kate McKinnon, Sharon Rooney, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Scott Evans, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell and Helen Mirren.

Barbie not perfect enough?

All we know about the plot itself is that Barbie is banished from Barbieland for not being perfect enough. The heroine sets out with Ken on a journey around the real world, where she experiences various adventures.

Margot Robbie, who is also the producer of the film, told Variety that her image encourages not to rely on associations that automatically come to mind when thinking about Barbie. She also expressed her hope that her film would bring some positive energy to young people’s lives and encourage them to make their dreams come true.
