On Saturday evening, firefighters extinguished a fire in an apartment in one of the tenement houses in the center of Będzin. They found the body of a woman inside.
Firefighters were informed about smoke in the apartment at Plac Kazimierza Wielkiego in Będzin (Silesian Voivodeship) before 8 p.m. Four fire brigades were dispatched to the site.

– 12 rescuers participated in the operation. Our actions consisted of extinguishing the fire and searching the apartments for the presence of dangerous gases. During the search of the apartment, we discovered the woman's body – says senior captain Krystian Biesiadecki, press officer of the State Fire Service in Będzin.
Firefighters did not have to evacuate anyone – the residents left the apartments themselves before their arrival.

Police: The stove door was ajar
Firefighters finished their activities around 9:30 p.m. After their completion, further activities were carried out by the police and the prosecutor.
According to junior aspirant Marcin Szopa, press officer of the District Police Headquarters in Będzin, the deceased woman was 74 years old.

– Firefighters who were at the scene initially determined the cause of the fire – the tiled stove door was ajar – says Szopa.
He adds that this was mainly due to the heavy smoke and the fire did not have time to develop much. – The doctor who arrived at the scene and confirmed the woman's death indicated that the cause was carbon monoxide poisoning. The prosecutor who arrived at the scene did not find that any third parties were involved in the incident, Szopa said.
The woman lived alone. During the operation, her daughter arrived at the scene.
