Alyaksandr Lukashenka has always dreamed of having nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, and the dream has come true, said the former Belarusian ambassador to Poland and oppositionist Pawel Łatuszka on TVN24 BiS, referring to the words of the Belarusian president that his country began to receive tactical nuclear weapons from Russia. “We see that the lack of a strategy in the European Union, even in the United States, on what to do with Lukashenka has led to a situation where Lukashenka has upped the ante,” he added.

The leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko he said on Russian state television that his country had started receiving from Russia tactical nuclear weapons. “We have rockets and bombs that we received from Russia,” Lukashenko’s word agency quoted him as saying.

The plan to deploy tactical nuclear weapons was announced by the Russian president Vladimir Putin in an interview on state television on March 25. Two months later, the Kremlin announced that signed an agreement with Minsk on the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus

He was asked about Lukashenko’s words in an interview with TVN24 BiS Pawel Latuszkaformer ambassador Belarus in Poland and an oppositionist.

– Lukashenka has always dreamed of having nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, and the dream has come true. He actually realizes his desires, dating back to the 1990s, when he first became president of Belarus, he said.

– Because he considered it a historical mistake that the first government of independent Belarus signed an agreement on the removal of tactical nuclear weapons from the territory of Belarus. He insisted on it, and we see that now his demands are being fulfilled. He is afraid of a counteroffensive by the Ukrainian army. He is afraid that later it will be his turn – continued Łatuszka.

Lukashenka ‘demonstrates that he is still a subject of foreign policy’

According to the oppositionist, the Belarusian leader “demonstrates that he is still a subject of foreign policy, he wants to increase his status.” – He wants to sit at the same table with the president of the USA, Great Britain, prime minister or president of France. Of course, he will not succeed, but each of these leaders will know who Lukashenko is. He also denies the previous words of Putin, Peskov, Shoigu that he will not have the right to decide on the use of nuclear weapons. He says the opposite – that he will decide with Putin and they will be ready to use nuclear weapons when, for example, the NATO army goes through Rzeszów to Ukraine, if there is aggression against Belarus – he continued.

Latushka: now Lukashenko is the leader in the military-political game

At the same time, Latushka warned against spreading panic. – We do not want to arouse emotions, say that this increases the risk – he emphasized.

At the same time, he expressed doubts whether the West would be able to unequivocally react to the possible use of tactical nuclear weapons from the territory of Belarus.

– We see that the lack of a strategy in the European Union, even in the United States, on what to do with Lukashenka has led to a situation where Lukashenka has upped the ante. Now he is actually a leader in the military-political game. The question is – how can the West react? In a military, military or political way? Introduce a trade embargo with Belarus so that Lukashenko understands how much it costs to possess nuclear weapons, how much his threats cost, (…). He actually poses a threat and again there is no public reaction so as not to arouse public sentiment – said Paweł Łatuszka.

– And is there a non-public reaction? A question arises here too. I am afraid that monitoring the situation will not help to reduce the risk. We can monitor the trajectory of this rocket, which will fly towards Ukraine or the West, he continued.

Latushka: I warn you that there will be strategic weapons in Belarus

– We lost time when we said that we had to act very hard in 2020 (then the last presidential elections were held in Belarus – ed.) To support the proactive movement in Belarus, there was no activity. Then, in 2021, we warned that there would be tactical weapons in Belarus. Now I warn you that there will be a strategic weapon in Belarus, and we will see Lukashenka aiming at Washington, London and Berlin as well. I do not want to raise the mood here, but I see that it is going in this direction, because there is no reaction to it – said the TVN24 BiS interlocutor.

Latushka about the possible response of the West to Lukashenko’s actions

When asked what kind of action he would expect, he replied that, for example, the introduction of a trade embargo would be severe for the Belarusian regime. – Then he, due to the fact that he has a complication with the economy anyway, will have to somehow react to the economic situation in society. Closing correspondent accounts in American banks for Belarusian banks, when the flow of capital from the USA is not possible, may be severe. For example, issuing an arrest warrant against Lukashenka, because he is accused of kidnapping Ukrainian children. We said (…) that he commits crimes against humanity, and these crimes should be punished,” he continued.

Latushka was also asked about the situation of political prisoners in Belarus.

– Unfortunately, the situation is dramatic and is getting worse, because we can say that according to Wiasna’s data (Centre for the Defense of Human Rights), there are now 1,500 political prisoners, and according to various experts’ estimates, up to five thousand political prisoners. Every day there are more arrests, there are more sentences, sentencing not to a year but to 10, 12, 16 years in prison – he said.

In his opinion, “only the liquidation of the regime can lead to a change in the situation.”
