The Belarusian government is using migrants to blackmail Europe, said the leader of the Belarusian opposition Sviatlana Cichanouska on Saturday. Since the spring, there has been a sharp increase in the number of attempts to illegally cross the border by migrants from the Middle East, Africa and other regions on the border of Belarus with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland.
The leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Cichanouska, stated that the Belarusian government is using migrants to blackmail Europe, the Euronews news channel reported on Saturday. In an interview in Greece by the local branch of the Cichanouska station, which participated in the Athens Democracy Forum conference, she explained how the Belarusian authorities are exerting pressure on EU borders.
– All these people at the borders come there with KGB officers. Migrants are being followed by people from the regime, which is why they are “organized groups,” said the leader of the Belarusian opposition. – Of course, for Europe it is a huge problem what to do with these people, because migrants are also hostages of this system. They are not guilty of being victims of the regime, she added.
Since the spring, there has been a sharp increase in the number of attempts to illegally cross the border by migrants from the Middle East, Africa and other regions on the border of Belarus with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. The EU and its member states believe that this is the result of deliberate actions by Belarus in response to the sanctions. Minsk denies accusations of triggering the migration crisis.
Lukashenka wants to hold a constitutional referendum
According to an announcement by Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka, a constitutional referendum is to be held in the country no later than February next year, which is to appoint a new governing body called the All-Belarus People’s Congress (WNS). According to some independent experts, after leaving office, Lukashenka would take another position created for him and allow him to retain a decisive influence on politics, for example the chairman of the new governing body. The Belarusian opposition has announced that it will not recognize the results of this vote. – Everyone in Belarus knows that this referendum is like throwing sand in the eyes of Europe, a signal “look, I’m doing something for democratization”. It seems to me that people will be so scared of violence that nobody will vote at all – predicted Cichanouska.
