The Supreme Court in Minsk ordered the liquidation of the PEN Centrum association of independent Belarusian writers. It was led by Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Alekseevich.
The PEN Centrum organization informed about Monday’s verdict of the Supreme Court on the Telegram channel. The deputy head of the association, Tacciana Niadbaj, told reporters that the decision was expected, but the organization did not intend to give up and intends to file complaints. – We perceive the verdict as a formal fulfillment of a political order and the liquidation of the organization for political reasons – she added.
Niadbaj has not specified who will be the addressee of the complaints. The judgment of the Supreme Court cannot be appealed.
The Belarusian PEN Centrum was established in 1989. It unites independent writers. Since 2019, the organization has been led by the Nobel Prize winner, Swiatłana Aleksiewicz, who is also a member of the opposition Coordination Council.
The Belarusian independent media reported on July 22 that the Supreme Court of Belarus initiated civil proceedings in the case of the lawsuit by the Ministry of Justice regarding the liquidation of PEN Centrum. Three days later, the organization said that her bank account had been blocked on the basis of the decision of the Investigative Committee of Belarus.
Earlier, PEN Centrum accused the authorities in Minsk of repressing cultural activists.
