Two Russian special forces soldiers died during the Russian-Belarusian exercises at a training ground near the village of Hoża in the Grodno region of Belarus, the Ministry of Defense of Russia confirmed on Friday. The commandos died during the parachute jumps. It happened during exercises of airborne troops near the border of Belarus with Poland and Lithuania.
Earlier, the opposition BYPOL organization, which grouped representatives of Belarusian power ministries who had escaped abroad, informed about the accident.
Exercises by Russian and Belarusian troops at the Polish border
On Friday morning Belarus’s defense ministry has announced commencement of joint maneuvers of specialized units of the armed forces of Belarus and Russian airborne troops.
According to the Belarusian Ministry of Defense, Russian Il-76 transport planes and helicopters of Belarusian troops take part in the exercises. The military is to train together to take over and maintain the bridgehead, search for and destroy designated objects, as well as subversive and reconnaissance units of the enemy and battle groups.
The exercises take place near the village of Hoża in the Grodno Oblast, 5 km from the Lithuanian border and 25 km from the Polish border. In the border areas with Belarus, there is a migration crisis in both of these countries.
