An illegal cigarette factory operated in an apartment in Bemowo. The police detained three people and seized the production and packaging machines.

– A few days ago, policemen from the Department for Combating Economic Crime and Corruption from Wola were observing the Warsaw district of Bemowo from the morning. Their operational findings showed that a woman aged 33 and a man aged 43 had been producing cigarettes without Polish excise stamps for a long time. Marta Sulowska, press officer of the district police commander Warsaw IV. “They were both detained when they appeared at the parked vehicle, from which they took cardboard boxes and were walking to the premises in the apartment block,” he adds.

Tobacco in cartons, machines in the apartment

The cartons contained packages for cigarettes, tubes and tobacco. Together with the detainees, the policemen went to the apartment. They searched the premises, where there were four machines for the production of cigarettes and a device for packing them into boxes. Cigarettes, tobacco, and boxes were scattered on the floor. They also found a 66-year-old woman in the apartment packing cigarettes in boxes. She was also detained.

The police also searched their vehicles. They found tobacco, a roll of aluminum foil and cigarette boxes. In another apartment belonging to one of the detained persons, they secured PLN 12,000 in cash. There were also cigarette boxes.

In total, the police found over 68 kilograms of tobacco, over 5,600 cigarettes, four machines for their production, tubes and packing boxes.

Charges against detainees

– The detained persons were brought to the Wola police station. After collecting the evidence, they heard criminal charges, the superintendent informs. Marta Sulowska. – The suspect, aged 66, will answer for aiding in the production of cigarettes without Polish excise stamps, for which she may be sentenced to three years in prison. The other two persons heard two criminal charges of acting jointly and in concert, concerning the production of cigarettes without Polish excise stamps, which exposed the State Treasury to losses totaling almost PLN 48,000, and excise receipts, making this crime a permanent source of income. They could face up to eight years in prison if convicted.
