Argentine President Javier Milei and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reached an agreement on several issues, but their meeting in Berlin was “very short” and full of tension, German media report. At Milei's request, the press conference was abruptly canceled. Moreover, his visit was accompanied by demonstrations.

Argentine President Javier Milei met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday in Berlin. Their conversation was – as German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said – “a very short working meeting”, organized “at the request of the President of Argentina”.

Also at Milei's request, the announced joint press conference of the politicians and the military honors with which the German side wanted to receive Milei were canceled with little notice. As summarized by the dpa agency, the only public appearance of Milei and Scholz was a short posing for photojournalists in front of the chancellor's office.

“Die Welt” emphasizes that the inaugural visit of the Argentine leader lasted only an hour and was accompanied by protests on the streets of Berlin.

Milei arrived in Berlin accompanied by his sister, who is also the secretary general of the President of Argentina.

Agreement on Ukraine

In talks with the President of Argentina, the German Chancellor referred to the reforms he is implementing, said a spokesman for the German government. Milei imposed a radical austerity program on his recession-hit country, including: privatization, mass layoffs in the public sector and cuts in education, social care and health care – reminds “Die Welt”.

Scholz appealed to Milei to remember, when introducing reforms, the limited resilience of society and maintaining social cohesion, which – as he emphasized – should be “important points of reference.”

Scholz and Milei also agreed that “Russia has the ability to end the war against Ukraine,” Hebestreit said.

The politicians also talked about the economic relations of their countries and expressed their support for a quick end to the 25-year-long negotiations on the creation of a free trade zone between the European Union and the Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay). Scholz also supported Argentina's accession to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Demonstrations in Berlin after the arrival of the Argentine president

Milei's visit to Germany was accompanied by demonstrations. A group of people with Argentine flags protested in front of the chancellor's office. “Down with Milei, down with the right-wing extremist government”, “no trade with despots”, “Milei, you think you are a lion, but you are just a fascist pig” – the protesters carried banners with such content.
