Berlinale 2024. Golden Bear for the film “Dahomey” by Mati Diop

The 74th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival is coming to an end. The awards gala took place on Saturday evening. The jury, chaired by Lupita Nyong’o, appreciated the documentary film “Dahomey” directed by Mati DIop with the Golden Bear.

Berlinale 2024 – the 74th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, one of the most important film events in the world – will end on Sunday. On Saturday evening, we learned the winners of awards, including the Main Competition.

This year’s edition opened with the film “Small Things Like This” directed by Tim Mielants and starring Cillian Murphy. The jury of the Main Competition was chaired by an actress Lupita Nyong’o. Together with her, the 20 competition titles were assessed by: Brady Corbet, Ann Hui, Christian Petzold, Jasmine Trinca, Albert Serra and Oksana Zabużko.

Berlinale 2024. Golden Bear for “Dahomey”

For the second year in a row, the most important award at the Berlin festival went to a documentary film. He was awarded the Golden Bear “Dahomey” directed by Mati Diop. The statuette was received by the French-Senegalese director and co-producer.


This is Diop’s biggest success to date, but not her only one. In 2019, she became the first black director whose film – “Atlantyk” – was included in the Main Competition of the Cannes Film Festival. It was then recognized with the second most important award of the festival – the Grand Jury Prize.

“Dahoney” concerns 26 valuable artifacts of the Kingdom of Dahomey, which existed in the years 1600-1904 in the territory of today’s Benin. Royal treasures were stolen during the colonial era and taken to France. They were presented in one of the Paris museums. They were officially returned to the Benin government in November 2022.

He received the Silver Bear – the Grand Jury Prize “A Traveler’s Needs” directed by one of the most respected South Korean filmmakers Hong Sang Soon. Isabelle Huppert played the main role in his latest film.

Bruno Dumontan esteemed French filmmaker who delighted the film world with his debut “The Life of Jesus” in 1997, received the Silver Bear – Jury Award for the film “L’Empire”. The apocalyptic comedy-drama is described as an extremely interesting parody of the “Star Wars” saga.

The jury awarded Sebastian Stan Silver Bear for the best leading role. Stan played the main role in the American psychological thriller “A Different Man” directed by Aaron Schimberg.

Twice nominated for Oscar English actress for her roles in the films “Breaking the Waves” and “Hilary and Jackie”. Emily Watson She was awarded the Silver Bear for the best supporting role. Watson starred in “Small Things Like This” by Tim Mielants.

He became the best director Nelson Carlo De Los Santos Arias for the movie “Pepe”. The Silver Bear for the best screenplay went to the German filmmaker Matthias Glasner for “Sterben”, which he directed himself. This is Glasner’s third film to be included in the Berlin Main Competition, after “Free Will” from 2006 and “Mercy” from 2012.

Berlinale 2024. Martin Scorsese with the Bear

This year’s winner of the honorary Golden Bear was Martin Scorsese. The American cinema master was recognized during a gala evening on Tuesday, February 20. The laudation in Scorsese’s honor was given by Wim Wenders.

After five years, its current directors: Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian, are saying goodbye to the Berlinale. Last December, it was announced that the new CEO of the festival would be Tricia Tuttle, former director of the BFI London Film Festival.
