Białystok-Krywlany Airport may be expanded. The city of Białystok, Polish Airports and the local government of the Podlaskie Voivodeship signed a letter of intent on cooperation in the development of the port in Podlasie. The Mayor of Białystok, Tadeusz Truskolaski, emphasized that there is a chance for a local airport where 4-6 flight operations would take place per day.
Białystok-Krywlany Airport currently has a runway of less than 1.4 km. The belt was put into use a few years ago, but – due to the so-called air obstacles, which are the forest growing nearby – it cannot be used over its full length. The investment was an initiative of the Białystok authorities, also co-financed by the Podlaskie Voivodeship government. Now the local government wants to expand the port.
Letter of intent regarding the airport in Białystok
The authorities of Białystok, the local government of the Podlaskie Voivodeship and Polish Airports (PPL) signed a letter of intent on the development of the Białystok-Krywalny airport on Tuesday. Białystok joined such an agreement, which the provincial government and PPL signed already in October.
Voivodeship Marshal Artur Kosicki said before signing the letter that joint actions are intended to ensure that the region is not “a blank spot on the map of air transport in our country.”
The plan is to establish a working team that – based on data and prepared analyzes – would prepare an offer for Krywlan’s activities, adapted to both the size and potential of this airport. The team will consist of 9 members, each party will nominate 3 people.
– This is an investment that should be implemented beyond certain political divisions (…), I cannot imagine the development of the voivodeship without the construction of an airport here in Białystok. So that business can develop, so that residents can use it as they should – emphasized Kosicki.
The Mayor of Białystok about the new airport
The Mayor of Białystok, Tadeusz Truskolaski, recalled that the city undertook – with the financial support of the voivodeship government – to build a runway, but – due to the need to remove the so-called air obstacles – it is not used in its full length. – Only the cooperation of the government, in this case the Polish Airports company, the voivodeship marshal and the city president can get us off the ground – said Truskolaski. The city cannot go through the legal procedure to be able to legally cut down part of the forest near the airport.
He emphasized that it would not be a large airport, but a local airport. – We are determined by the conditions that exist. And the conditions are such that we have as much space as we have, the belt we have, and we want to develop it on this basis. Because there is no chance for a regional airport at the moment (…). There is a chance for a local airport, I am talking about 4-6 air operations (passenger flights) a day – added Truskolaski.
Both local governments have secured PLN 1 million each in next year’s budgets for activities related to Krywlany, including: for the establishment of an airport management company.
PPL: we are ready to erase this “blank spot” together
– We feel our role here as a provider of knowledge who is ready to undertake analyzes, all documents regarding the implementation strategy of this project, and to calculate in several variants what is profitable, what the costs will be, what is needed for the planes to start operating here take off and land – said PPL president Stanisław Wojtera.
He said that there are several options, and each of them involves, for example, different outlays and different costs of maintaining these facilities. – We have “know how”, we want to share it, we are ready to erase this “blank spot” together – added Wojtera.
Last year, 10,000 flights took place at Krywlany airport. flight operations. This year there is a visible increase, mainly due to the large traffic of helicopters and military aircraft.
