The ward of child psychiatry at the Children and Youth Mental Health Center in Bialystok, opened last year, lacks staff. The head of the center says that at least two more psychotherapists and three doctors would be useful. The needs are so great that there are no beds, and only 28 places are contracted with the National Health Fund.

– At the end of last year, there were 39 patients in the child psychiatry ward. There was not a single bed or mattress to put another person on – said on Wednesday (January 11) on TVN24 Dr. Jacek Bida, head of the Children and Youth Mental Health Center.

He added that contracted with National Health Fund there are 28 places, while currently there are 29 children in the ward.

– It would be useful to have at least two psychotherapists and at least three doctors who could secure the functioning of the ward – noted the head of the centre.

Increasing the number of doctors and psychotherapists would mean that each of them would have more time to devote to a specific patient.

So far, Podlasie has been a “white spot”

The center was established on October 1 last year. It operates at the University Children’s Clinical Hospital in Białystok.

– Many patients who have been to Warsaw or other places so far can finally return to a place that is closer to their homes. So in Podlasie, which was previously a “white spot” – said our reporter Mateusz Grzymkowski.

He added that he heard from Dr. Bida that the reason for the situation is a systemic error resulting from many years of neglect by successive governments.
