Initially, forester Waldemar Grzebyk from the Pechnów forestry in the Bircza forest district (Podkarpackie province) thought that a piece of metal sticking out of the ground in the forest was a wagon wheel rim. It turned out, however, that it was a church bell buried in the ground with the image of Michael the Archangel. The dedication shows that the bell was founded in 1928.

Edward Marszałek, spokesman for the Regional Directorate of State Forests in Krosno, informed about the discovery. As he emphasized, it was only by chance that the bell, lying in the ground for several dozen years, was found.

Discovery in the forest

A fragment of metal lying under a layer of soil and forest litter was noticed at the end of April by forester Waldemar Grzebyk from the Pechnów Forestry in the Bircza Forest District. At first he was convinced it was the steel rim of a wagon wheel. When he made sure that it was the bell, he masked the place and reported the matter to his superiors, who contacted the Regional Office for the Protection of Monuments in Krosno.

– After the field inspection, which took place on May 16, specialists confirmed that we are dealing with a bell. The excavation of the find from the ground was commissioned to the Archaeological Studio from Rzeszów – said Damian Kwiatkowski, deputy forest inspector in Bircza.

Extraction of the bell

Work is scheduled for Saturday, June 3. In addition to archaeologists, members of the Exploration and Historical Association “Galicja” also took part in the action. After about two hours of digging, a bell with a wreath diameter of 60 cm was extracted from the ground, with a bas-relief depicting the likeness of St. Michael the Archangel, patron of the church from Jamna Górna.

– The temple existed until 1956 and was located about 300 meters from the discovery site, hence the presumption that the bell comes from this object. The dedication written in Cyrillic on the bell’s mantle shows that it was founded in 1928 – said the forest inspector Kwiatkowski.

Goes to the museum

The bell has been preserved in very good condition, although there are a few nicks on the wreath. There is no heart that made his cloak resonate.

Damian Kwiatkowski believes that this is not the last find in the area where villages existed until 1947, and now a forest grows there. – Probably in the future, history researchers and archaeologists will come across many other silent witnesses of the very turbulent history of this part of Podkarpacie – says the forest inspector.
