Bishops are punished for sons ‘sins, pedophilia is a social problem, and environments hostile to the Church deliberately publicize a small percentage of priests’ crimes, Auxiliary Bishop Antoni Długosz believes. On Wednesday, during the Jasna Góra Appeal in Częstochowa, he said that the bishop “is betraying his calling when he becomes a prosecutor who reports his sinning son to the courts.” The words of Bishop Długosz were criticized by Father Tadeusz Isakowicz-Zaleski and the chairman of the State Commission for the Investigation of Pedophilia Błażej Kmieciak.
On Wednesday, during the Jasna Góra Appeal in Częstochowa, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Częstochowa, Antoni Długosz, said that “we are experiencing the planned attack on the bishops with great pain.” – This is related to the accusations that some of them disregarded concern for the people injured by priests, downplaying the perpetrators of these acts – he said during the evening prayer.
– The bishop is to be a merciful father, as in answering the Lord Jesus he gives the prodigal son a chance. He misappropriates his calling when he becomes a prosecutor reporting on a sinning son. The logic of Satan, who accuses without any sign of mercy, is far from him. If there is no improvement in the sinning priest, then the priest should take responsibility for his actions, not a merciful bishop – stated Bishop Antoni Długosz.
– Bishops are punished for the sins of sons who have abused their merciful attitude. Pedophilia is a social problem, he said to those gathered at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Częstochowa at Jasna Góra. The bishop referred to a statement by “a representative of the German police”, who said that 95 percent of pedophilic offenses occur in families, and 0.25 percent concern clergy. – It seems that there is a similar one in our country. The planned attack by milieus hostile to the church deliberately publicizes only this small percentage of priests’ crimes, he added.
Reactions to the words of Bishop Antoni Długosz about the scale of pedophilia in the Church
“The words of Bishop Długosz are unfortunately detached from concern for another human being. Everyone is obliged to inform law enforcement agencies about the crime of pedophilia. The bishop seems to be a” merciful father “especially for those who suffer, not those who hurt by committing a crime.” – wrote on Twitter Błażej Kmieciak, chairman of the State Commission for the investigation of cases of pedophilia.
“At Jasna Góra, Bishop Antoni Długosz from the Archdiocese of Częstochowa criticized the Orthodox Church, Anglicans, Archbishop Lefabvre and those who want to cleanse the Church of pedophilia. He also accused of ‘attacking merciful bishops'” – wrote the president of the foundation. Brother Albert, priest Tadeusz Isakowicz-Zaleski, chaplain of the disabled.
