The weekend has been marked by the highest level of traffic density on motorways and main roads in Italy, marked in black. Saturday and Sunday will be the peak time for trips by millions of Italians. Most of them will travel by car.
The first weekend of August traditionally sees the holiday rush intensify, warns Italian traffic police. Significant traffic volume has been recorded since Friday afternoon and is increasing with each passing hour.
According to these forecasts, the heaviest traffic will be on Saturday morning, especially on the roads leading out of the big cities towards the seaside and mountain towns, and on the sections leading to the borders in the north. Everyone must expect traffic jams and difficulties. It is also predicted that returning on Sunday evening will not be easy.
In order to improve car traffic, roadworks have been suspended at 906 locations across the country until September 3. This is 70 percent of all work being carried out.
There is also a lot of traffic at the airports, especially at Rome's Fiumicino. Currently, an average of 160,000 passengers per day is recorded there, the airport's management reported.
