Several hundred dead fish appeared in Lake Kowalski (Wielkopolskie Voivodeship) – bream, pike, roach, perch, eel, small catfish. Preliminary results of samples carried out by environmental inspectors showed that the main cause was too low oxygen content in the water and its high temperature. Mr. Karol from Jerzyków (Wielkopolskie) informed us via Contact 24that dead fish have been lying on the shore of Lake Kowalski for several days.

The dead fish appeared on Wednesday (June 28). The Ratuj Ryby Foundation announced on social media that about 300 dead fish had been fished out. It is mainly pike, bream, roach, eel, perch and small European catfish.

Former MP Dariusz Lipiński also referred to the case on Thursday (June 29) on Twitter. “Someone seriously poisoned Lake Kowalskie (communes of Swarzędz and Pobiedziska). Pass it on, maybe it will help the police catch the bully. The view from half an hour ago,” he wrote.

Employees of the State Water Holding Polish Waters from Poznań have been monitoring the condition of Lake Kowalski from the very beginning.

“After receiving information about irregularities, the pollution case was immediately reported to the Voivodship Inspectorate for Environmental Protection and to the user of the fishing water reservoir Kowalski on the Główna River. The fishing user notified of the incident carried out the action of catching and removing dead fish” – we read in the press release of the State Water Holding Wody Polskie from Poznan.

Low oxygen content in the water

The Provincial Inspectorate for Environmental Protection in Poznań announced on Monday that the cause of fish death was low oxygen content and high water temperature in the reservoir. This caused the release of bottom sediments, which was accompanied by an unpleasant odor for a long time.

“Preliminary results of the analyzes indicate that the cause of fish death was the low oxygen content in the water reservoir and increased water temperature. Full test results will be known in about 14 days, after the analyzes are carried out by the Central Research Laboratory, Poznań Branch of the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection. the smell came from bottom sediments that were disturbed at the exit of the Główna River from the Kowalski Reservoir, the Provincial Inspectorate for Environmental Protection in Poznań said in a statement.
