Navy Dominican Republican island nation in the Caribbean, found a boat off its coast with 14 human skeletons and packages containing suspected drugs, local media reported Wednesday. The macabre discovery was made about 10 nautical miles off the coast, near the city of Rio San Juan in the country's north.
“After finding a boat of unknown origin and manufacture off the coast of Rio San Juan, the bones of 14 people of Senegalese and Mauritanian origin were discovered on board,” the Dominican navy said in a statement.
The cause and circumstances of death are unknown.
The origin of the deceased was determined based on identification documents found on them. There were also 40 backpacks, 50 cell phones, a satellite phone, a GPS on the boat. One of the backpacks contained 12 packages that authorities believe contain drugs, possibly cocaine or heroin.
The immediate cause and circumstances of the deaths of the deceased are unknown. Authorities suspect that the boat, carried away by the sea currents, went off course. The Dominican Navy said it would investigate the matter.
