An Australian man arrested in Indonesia’s ultra-conservative province of Aceh for assault while under the influence of alcohol is set to be deported. The 23-year-old, after an apology and financial compensation, avoided punishment. He was facing up to five years in prison.

Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones was arrested by Indonesian police in April in a village on the island of Simeulue in Aceh province. The 23-year-old was intoxicated and, according to locals, ran naked out of the hotel after midnight, behaving aggressively and injuring at least one fisherman. The media described that he was in a “drunk and naked frenzy”.

After being arrested, he claimed that he had drunk a small shot of vodka, but was suffering from sunstroke after surfing the day before. “I feel like I’m not myself, like I’m almost possessed.” It wasn’t a good feeling. I’m usually a good guy,” he told ABC News in April.

Australian media reported that fisherman Edi Ron was knocked off his motorcycle and suffered a serious foot injury. “(23-year-old) He went berserk, chasing people,” Ron described in an interview with Australian television 7News.

Risby-Jones, who flew to Indonesia on a surfing trip, he was released from Simeulue prison after six weeks on Wednesday after he apologized and paid 250 million rupees (just over PLN 66,000) to the fisherman he attacked. The Australian has not faced criminal charges.

If charged with assault and found guilty, he could face up to five years in prison – Indonesian province of Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra, in 2015 introduced sharia lawrestrictive, Islamic-based penal code.

– I feel great relief, I’m happy. I made a fool of myself. This has been shown publicly all over the world – he admitted after his release.

Originally from the Sunshine Coast in south-east Queensland, the 23-year-old, an immigration official said, will be deported to Australia. “He is now waiting for a plane ticket from his embassy,” the official added. Until then, Risby-Jones will remain in immigration detention in Meulaboh.
