Bodnar met with Metsola. He announces a plan to end the EU procedure for Poland

Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar announced during a meeting with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, that at next week’s meeting of the General Affairs Council of the European Parliament he will present an action plan that will lead to the completion of the procedure for Poland provided for in Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union – the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

During the conversation, he announced that at next week’s meeting of the General Affairs Council, the EP will present an action plan that will lead to the completion of the procedure for Poland provided for in Art. 7. “Minister Bodnar expressed hope that this (completion of the procedure – ed.) will happen before the EP elections,” the press release emphasized.

December 20, 2017 European Commission decided to launch the procedure against Poland provided for in Art. 7 of the Treaty on European Union. It concerns a “serious breach by a Member State of the values ​​of the Union”.

Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union gives the EU the ability to discipline and punish countries that violate EU values. The procedure itself consists of several stages. The first is to recognize that there is a risk of violations in one of the countries (7.1.). Then, in the second step, all governments determine that the breach is persistent and serious (7.2.) and if this happens, they can proceed to the third step. This is what voting on sanctions is (7.3.).

Roberta Metsola’s visit to Poland

Thursday was the second day of the official visit to Poland of the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. She met with Prime Minister Donald Tuskshe also talked to the Speaker of the Sejm Szymon HołowniaSpeaker of the Senate Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski. She also spoke at the Senate meeting. He will visit Gdańsk on Friday.

The visit of the President of the European Parliament to Poland is part of her tour of all EU countries in the preceding period elections to the European Parliament, scheduled for June.
