One of the fires occurred on May 16 around 8:30 p.m. The officer on duty from the Police Station in Boguszowice received a report that a metal container with garbage was on fire in the area of ​​Osiedle Południe Street in front of the building. Firefighters extinguished the fire.

On the same day, around 10 p.m., the police station officer on duty received another report about burning garbage cans in the Południe Housing Estate. As a result of the fire, seven garbage containers have already burned down. The losses were estimated at PLN 37,000. An on-site examination by the investigation team indicated that arson had occurred.

Charges and the threat of severe punishment

“The next day, the deputy commander of the Police Station in Boguszowice – Commissioner Daniel Tomczyk – who was on duty, noticed a man who matched the description of the wanted man suspected of arson. The 60-year-old was detained and taken to police custody. It also turned out that the same man had set fire to a container on garbage also on April 9,” the Silesian police said in a statement.

The 60-year-old was taken to the prosecutor's office, where he was charged with causing a fire that threatened the life and health of many people, as well as large-scale property. At the request of investigators and the prosecutor, the District Court in Rybnik temporarily arrested him for three months. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
