The 2024/2025 season of the Champions League has seen huge changes compared to previous editions. From now on, 36 teams will compete in the so-called league phase. Each team will play eight matches – four at home, four away. The eight best teams will qualify directly for the 1/8 finals, and the teams from 9th to 24th places will compete in the play-offs to advance to this phase of the competition. The remaining teams are eliminated from the Champions League and are not relegated to the Europa League.
Zbigniew Boniek spoke about the new Champions League format. “That's all there is”
As soon as the matches between Juventus and PSV Eindhoven and Aston Villa and Young Boys began, UEFA Vice-President Zbigniew Boniek spoke out about the new edition of the Champions League.
“The clubs wanted to earn more, have more interesting matches in the initial phase. That's all there is to it. I had my concerns myself, but I am convinced that the format is really OK. I suggest waiting with the assessment. Please see what matches we have today, tomorrow and Thursday and it will always be like that,” Boniek announced in a post on the X portal.
And how much money is the new edition of the Champions League about? According to calculations by the Football Meets Data profile, the worst team in the league should receive just over 21 million euros – that's almost the annual budget of this team, which normally plays in a league where other teams have 2 million euros at their disposal. The biggest will receive the most. Four clubs – PSG, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Liverpool – can count on over 60 million euros.
