Thousands of asylum applications in Germany

As Welt am Sonntag writes, the German Ministry of the Interior did not want to comment on the data. The newspaper also learned from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) that 3,626 asylum applications were filed during the same period. The previous week, there were 3,581, and the week before that, 3,063. Asylum applications are filed directly upon entry to Germany or shortly thereafter.

Checks at all borders

Since Monday, September 16, random checks have been in force at all German land borders. Checks were introduced on the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland in October last year. They have been in force on the border with Austria since autumn 2015. Stationary and mobile checks are planned for six months until mid-March next year, but they may be extended.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser ordered the measures “to stop illegal migration”. According to data from the German Interior Ministry, around 52,000 cases of illegal entry into Germany have been recorded since border controls were introduced in October last year, and around 30,000 people have been sent back, including for missing or invalid travel documents.
