The US Department of Finance announced on Monday the imposition of sanctions on the president of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croat Marinko Czavara and the Minister of Health of Republika Srpska, Alen Seranic, for destabilizing the situation and threatening peace agreements.

“Marinko Czavara and Alen Seranić pursued ethno-nationalist and political goals at the expense of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s democratic institutions and citizens,” US Undersecretary of the Treasury Brian Nelson wrote in a statement.

Marinko Czavara is the leader of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of the two constituent parts of the country, and a politician of the Croatian Democratic Community of BiH (HDZ BiH).

The reason for the imposition of sanctions is that the president has been refusing to appoint judges to the local Constitutional Court for three years, which has led to a political stalemate and prevented reforms.

Alen Seranić, health minister of Republika Srpska (RS), the Serb-dominated second component of BiH, contributed to the establishment of a drug agency separate from the state-wide agency, undermining Bosnia’s constitutional order.

“BiH has been facing the most serious crisis since 1995, being constrained by ethno-nationalist political parties supported by cronyism. The ruling coalition in Republika Srpska is trying to establish parallel structures that undermine the power of state institutions, and the leaders of the Croatian Democratic Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina cripple the democratic processes in Bosnia and Herzegovina. country, “US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

This is another series of US sanctions against politicians from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Earlier, restrictions on separatist activities included, among others, Serbian member of the Presidium of BiH Milorad Dodik, former prime minister and president of the RS.
