The number of victims of a collapsed apartment building in the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil has increased to 14. The tragedy happened while the residents were still sleeping. Local authorities attribute the construction disaster to heavy rainfall.

Construction disaster in Brazil

The tragedy happened while the residents of the house were still asleep. Among the dead are two children, aged eight and five. Three people survived the crash. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident.

The search operation began on Friday. Rescuers tried to find people trapped under the rubble of the building – the recording of this action was published on Twitter by the governor’s officials.

Local authorities attribute the collapse of the building to heavy rains. The port city of Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco, with a population of over 1.5 million, has been hit by heavy rainfall in recent days. Authorities have urged residents to make sure they have access to safe places to take shelter during the downpours.
